Am I Eligible?
You are entitled to a free NHS eye test if you satisfy one of the following criteria:
- Aged 60 or over
- Aged under 16, or under 19 and in full-time education
- Registered blind or partially sighted
- Diagnosed with diabetes or glaucoma
- Aged 40 or over and have a close relative with glaucoma
- Eligible for an NHS complex lens voucher
- Receive certain benefits such as Income Support
Urgent Eye Care – NIPEARS
If you have a sudden eye problem such as redness, pain, flashes or changes in vision, you can be seen quickly by your local optometrist through the NIPEARS scheme. This NHS service allows you to access urgent eye care directly, without needing a GP appointment.

- Sudden blurred vision
- Pain or discomfort in the eye or eyelids
- A red eye
- A foreign body in the eye
- Sudden flashes and floaters

- Advice and treatment provided in practice
- Prescription of required medication
- Referral to your GP for non-eye conditions
- Urgent referral to a hospital eye clinic
